This painting portrays the ruined city and

e procession of the Lord of Earthquakes, and

a.n inscription in the corner announces that it

was executed through the devotion of Alfonso

Cortez de Monroy.

· An

important artistic embellishment is the

Christ carved in wood, which is found in a ret–

ablo of the nave of the Epistle; the image of St.

John, and others. The principal altar of

the

Chance! is well worthy of note. I

t

is carved

in

\VOOd and ornam nted with pict.ures andgildings.

This \.Vas ordered made by Bishop Gerónimo de

Romaní y Carrillo at his own cost, in the

18th
