La Compañia.
History.
The present temple of La Compañia
is one of greatest artistic values in Cuzco;
it.
belonged to the Order of Jesuits which was ex–
pelled bo h
ro
Spain and from the Colonies by
order of Charles III, and it was in course of con–
struction
roro 1651 to 1688.
It was built
to
replace
t
e forme-r temple which was completely
destroyed by the earthquake of 1650 and was
built over the reinains of the great Inca pnlace
Amarucancha, formerly the residence of Huaya–
Capac. When the allotments of 1534 were made
this site was assigned to Hernando de Soto, and
afterward to Hernando Pizarro, but the J esuits
bought it with gifts of the neighborhood, among
the contributors being Diego de Silva.
