recounted as one, which ac length ended in fuch a terrible irruption of
fire
from a certain Hill, which for the fpace ofcwenty days continu~lly threw up fuch
quantities of Aíhes and Sand , as in che pares round abquc covered the Earth
two yards chick, and in places farther offat leaíl: a yard, and where leafr, a quarter
of a yard deép, for che fpace of thirty or fourty Leagues round in che Co.untrey
of
Arequepa;
whereby all their Vines and Com Lands were fpoiled, their Trees
and Fruits fcorched and blaíl:ed; and all cheir Cattel perilbed for wanc of paílure.
Th~ir Cows and Oxen lay dead in Droves of five hundred in a place, and their
Flocks ofSheep, and Goacs, and Hogs lay buried in thefe Albes. ·Many Houfes
were overwhelmed wlth che weight of che Earch and Sand, which chis irruptiori ,
threw up, fuch as remained were preferved by che diligeilce of chofe Maíl:ers w,ho
always cleared and chrew chem off as they carne; all \vhich was accómpanied
with fuch dreadfull Flalbes of Lighcning, and claps ofThunder, as were heard and
feen at thirty Leagues diíl:ance from che Confines of
Areq11epa;

the Clouds of Sand and Aíhes, which were thrown up, that for many days

obfcured the Sun, chat chey were forced
