as the Valley

where

Gonf~lo

was

encamped ; \ ho being

already

informed of

the

melfage

they brought, "'hich he knew would be unwelcome to

his

to

might

Carate,

which

are

again

confirm~d

by other Aurhours,

ho proceed and fay, That rhofe of

of the

City

of

made choice of

Don Antonio

and

Aug11ftine

de

Accountant General, becaufe they were both men acceprah

e

to

Gonf_alo

Pifarro,

and the leafi fu[peded by him ; for

that

Don Antqnio

was as

it were

his

Brother-in-law, having married the Widow of

Francifao Martin

de

Alcantara,

Bro–

ther to the Marquis

Don Francifco Piplrro,

and

Carate

was

a Per{( n,

ho being

a

firanger in the Countrey, had no engagements or obligations in

any

part

of

the

Countrey ;

for

which caafe,

as

we faid, they fuffered

Don Antonio

to pafs, by

rea–

fon of his alliance, but the Accountant

Carate

was flopped by them. Thus much

is confirmed by

Diego Fernandez:..,

who adds farther

in

the twenty fourth Chapter

of

his Book. That at

he

Council held by

Gon;alo Picarr()

and his Captains, to

confider of

the

Anfwer which was to be returned to the Meffiige fent

by

which

Francifco

like

a great Officer and Souldier made this reply, That whereas the Judges did

quire that

Gonfalo Pifarro

fhould come to chem

with

a

Guard onely of fifteen or

twenty Horfe, they underfiood it to be

fo

many in a Rank, to

which

interpretation

all

the Captains in the Council agreed, and concluded

char

it

was

all other

things

they would comply with the Judges, and that in cafe they fhould refufe

they were refolved not to

!hough

if

we impartially confider of chefe matters, we

flrnll

find that

che

intention of the Judges was not as ill Tongues fcandaloully reported,

but

was

to p•event worfe and more dangerous confequences, proceeding
