panions penetrated he large empire of Tahuan–

tinsuyo in 1532 after several expeditions had

sailed from Panamá in order to discover "the

golden country", or the domain of the Incas. In

November of this same year they arrived at Ca–

j amarca, where they met Atahualpa, the king

of the Quitos or Sciris, conqueror of his brother

Huascar; monarch of Cuezo, and legitimate suc–

cesor of · Huaynacapac.

Through audacious

strategy on the part of the Spaniards, Atahual–

pa was faken prisoner, and soon thereafte.r exe-

6uted by Pizarro, notwithstanding the fabulous

treasure proffered for his ransom; this treasure
