ON TllE PROJECTED
LU~ES
OF RAILROAD IN THE SOUTHERN PORTION OF BRAZIL.
We will divide the cxecution of the plan of railways h ercin delineated in the
sonth rn part of Brazil into three classes, viz:
(1)
Liues
of
grcat ttcccs ity, "nrgent," which we tlesiguate "primary."
('2)
Line~:~
in continuation of thc auove, which we will t.erm "seeondary" liucs.
(3)
Ultimately at
a
more remote period, as the increase of population will war-
rant, tbose we will denomiuate "final" lines of constrnctiou.
PRH:IARY LINES.
(1) l''rom tbe best port in the province of Santa Catharina to the city of Porto
Ale¡.rrc, capital of tbe province of Río Grande do Sol.
(~)
From tbe we tern part of Rio Grande do Sul. Porto Alegre to urnguayana.
(:3)
Alegrete t o Quarahim.
(4)
In the southern part of the province of Rio Grande do Sul, from Porto Alegre
to
J
aguarao.
SECONDARY
LL.~ES.

tonio aucl P epery-Guassú.

(6) From Sao Gabriel

FINAL LINES OF CONSTRUCTION.
(1)
Those from tne ports of Santos, Paranagua, and Desterro, in direction, re–
spectively, of the Colony Douradas, Sete Quedas in Parane, Pepery-Guas ·u, and Sao
Borja.
(2)
The lines from Si'"w Gabriel, passing through Santa Maria da Boca da :Monte,
Passo Fundo, and near to the city of Goyaz, may take direction to a point. on the
rigbt bank o.f the Amazon, between
SO
and
17°
long.
W.
of Río de
J
aneiro. This
will
be the Central Brazilian liue, at some point of whicb, when partially developed, is
tlestined to be the future capital of Bra.zil.
The line
s above mentioned are to run from the ports of Santos, Paranagua, Sao
Franci co,
a.udDesterro in direction we t, eros ing the future Brazilian central line.
It
is not ir
upo~:~ible,
or impracticable, that a liue conld be constrncted ruuniug from
the port of Valparai o, taking an ea ·tcrly course, and finding way over these severa!
lines, to tbe uuth .A.tlantic coast.
In a petitiou we made to tbe Imperial Governmeut in 1 65, from París, we asser ted,
in order to give tbe province of Río Grand do Snl a snre and available commnnica–
tiou with the ocean, tbat
it would be nece sary to unite the capital by raíl witb tbe
port of anta Cat.barina,
a.ndthat this line might serre as tbe common junction for
libe three great internatio
na.llines, viz:
First. To bring the city of Montevideo within eighty hours from tbe imperial cap–
ital.
Second. To make the Santa Catharina line the terminus for tbe ports of the republic
on the Sonth Pacific coast.
La tly. To bring the city of Ascnncion, capital of Paraguay, within four days
dis–
tance from Río de
J
aneiro.
By ::'ollowing thi plan the result will be our ha.-ing three railroad lines terminatiug
at as many differeut points on the frontier of the Ernpire.
On account of the extraordinary progre8s developing within the States on tbe Pa·
cific coa t, thereby enlarging tbe field of our operations, there is a neeessity for these
lines to meet tho e from Cobija, Caldera, or Copiapo, wbich are in earch of outlets,
the nearest upon the Brazilian coast, thus e tablishing great interoceanic line .
